Designed in 1994, Nomad chair is a beautiful example of the Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen’s style. Like a suspended veil, this elegant chair seems to float in the air. The minimal use of materials accentuates the sensation of lightness. A wide piece of white felt is the key component of this chair. Felt is a traditional Scandinavian material, which has also found its resonance in the contemporary art and more specifically in the universe of Joseph Beuys.

The felt plays a highly structural role for Nomad chair, not only covering it and adding to an already existent structure as a traditional textile, but actually forming the main structure, both the seat and the back, of the chair. Beyond the aesthetic qualities, this chair is also highly ergonomic, in the way that the felt marries perfectly the form of the body to offer a pleasurable and subtle comfort.

Nomad chair is in the collections of the Helsinki Design Museum, the Museum of Andewante Kunst in Cologne, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
