Alberte Svendsen
" My practice stems from a background as a furniture maker and exists at the intersection of art and craft. I focus on decoration, technique, and tactility, creating works that challenge traditional techniques and forms. Working primarily with wood and straw, I emphasize the materials' inherent qualities and sensory richness. "
Alberte Svendsen's practice is rooted in her training as a furniture maker and operates at the intersection of art and craftsmanship. She is particularly interested in ornamentation and works primarily with wood and rye straw, focusing on the materials' inherent physical and sensory qualities. Her technical knowledge allows her to both engage with traditional methods and develop new techniques. She aims to create works in which the materials' own characteristics are allowed to guide the process and become part of new, contemporary narratives.
Alberte Svendsen is an artist and furniture maker whose practice operates at the intersection of art and craft. Trained as a furniture maker, her work is grounded in a deep material understanding and a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, which she continuously challenges through experimentation and contemporary interpretation.
Working primarily with wood and straw, Svendsen explores decoration, technique, and tactility, emphasizing the inherent physical and sensory qualities of materials. Her intimate knowledge of wood enables her to engage both historical methods and innovative processes, allowing materials to guide the making process and contribute to new narratives. Rather than imposing form, she approaches making as a dialogue, in which structure, surface, and ornamentation emerge through attentive craftsmanship.
Svendsen's work has been widely exhibited in Denmark and internationally, including solo and group exhibitions at institutions, galleries, and design fairs. In 2024, her works were acquired by Designmuseum Denmark with support from the Danish Arts Foundation. She has received multiple distinctions, including a Silver Medal at the Journeyman's Examination in Furniture Making and a Danish Arts Foundation Work Grant for Young Talents. She is also a selected member of the Homo Faber Network and a jury member for craft awards.
Her education includes advanced training in Denmark, France, and Japan, with apprenticeships under master craftsmen and a specialization in woodworking techniques. From 2025 to 2027, she is a member of the Munkeruphus Artist Group, participating in a laboratory for sustainable art practices.
Through her work, Alberte Svendsen contributes to a contemporary discourse on craft, materiality, and ornamentation, positioning traditional skills as active agents in shaping new artistic expressions.
